The Birth of the Immortal Jellyfish

Sheer, Stretch and Structure

I designed a garment on the elements of sheer and structure. I did not visit stretch in my design development. The immortal jellyfish was the concept behind my design. Its fluidity and flowy presence drew me to the sheerness of chiffon and the shape of the head formed the silhouette for the sleeves. My main focus was on the textiles of the garment getting inspiration from the delicate string like tentacles and bonding threads inside fabric to represent this.

Designing for the designer

Irish Innovation Awards Finalist

In the design development stages of this garment I began to look at one collection from a chosen designer. By taking elements from two looks I incorporate them into a 6 piece line up with one garment being constructed. I chose McQueens S/S2007 collection using the element of quilting and incorporating it with my theme of dried flowers from a hydrangea plant, focusing on the colour and surface quality to be reflected in my garment. The skirt was hand dyed and crinkled when wet to resemble the veins and textures of the flowers. I quilted each section of the skirt by hand.

Mini Degree Collection

The initial concept behind the design development for my mini degree collection was the transition between old Native American Indian medicine against modern medicine of today. The fabric I chose to work with came from researching old medicine men looking at hemp and raw cotton in herb and earthy tones. The silhouettes for my garments were influenced by mental health and being confined, restrained and restricted.

This later became the more obvious mood to my mini degree collection.
